Time to stand together
Solidarity by OG Cubbie
The US inauguration has left many of us processing complex emotions. The politicians, news commentators, and bigots may differ, but their message remains consistent: be less visible, be less proud, be less you. Honestly, for the first time in my life, I'm uncertain about what lies ahead, and that is deeply unsettling.
Those familiar with the 1980s will recognise the familiar rhetoric. However, what distinguishes the current moment is the unprecedented nature of attacks on LGBTQ+ protections. For younger generations, it might be challenging to understand how these hard-won freedoms can be dismantled so quickly. Nevertheless, we have confronted uncertainty before.
The strength of our community has always been rooted in physical spaces. While social media helps us stay connected, LGBTQ+ venues foster a sense of community. These spaces are more than social venues; they are sanctuaries where we discover safety, form chosen families, and find the courage to be ourselves. Historically, they have been the birthplaces of LGBTQ+ movements.
Today, these vital spaces face extraordinary challenges. Having endured economic downturns, lockdowns, and rising costs. We need these venues more than ever. Here's how you can support LGBTQ+ venues and our broader community during this critical time:
Regularly visit LGBTQ+ venues to sustain these crucial community spaces.
Spend money at LGBTQ+ businesses and support local creators.
Choose authentic allies committed to year-round community advocacy.
Follow global LGBTQ+ news to understand interconnected challenges.
Engage in local politics and volunteer with LGBTQ+ organisations.
Challenge anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric wherever it emerges.
Throughout history, the LGBTQ+ community has transformed adversity into strength, turning moments of oppression into opportunities for progress. Our power lies in celebrating our shared humanity. This is how we have always persevered—with hope and unwavering courage.
